Through our affiliation with the Franciscan Cancer Center, patients have access to a wide range of cancer-related support groups offered locally and throughout the region including:

  • Knit for Life
  • Breast Cancer Support Group
  • Caregiver Support Group
  • Freedom from Tobacco Support Network
  • General Cancer Support Group in collaboration with the oncology social worker at Northwest Medical Specialties

Cancer nurse navigator
At the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center all of us are dedicated to science of medicine as well as the compassion of healing. That's why we offer services to help the mind, body and spirit. Patients receive help from a cancer nurse navigator, a registered nurse who guides helps guide patients through their cancer journey. The cancer nurse navigator is located at the center Tuesdays through Fridays.

Community outreach
The Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center participates in various community outreach programs promoting cancer prevention including:

  • Healthy Lifestyle Habits Presentations
  • Health fairs and community events
  • Look Good, Feel Better
  • Man-to-Man Support Group
  • Basic tobacco intervention skills training
  • American Legacy Foundation grant
  • Low-Income Mammogram grant

Community partnerships
Through our mission to create healthy communities, the Franciscan Cancer Center, along with the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center at St. Anthony, is pleased to participate as a sponsor and partner in numerous community events intended to educate the community about cancer prevention and early detection and raise funds for cancer research. Below are some of the events we support:
  • Susan G. Komen Lunch for the Cure
  • American Cancer Society Relay for Life
  • Cross-Cultural Collaborative Partner
  • ENACCT Grant for the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department
  • Partnership with the Korean Women's Association on Breast Cancer Outreach

Cancer resource center
The American Cancer Society Cancer Resource Center at St. Joseph Medical Center is the first and only of its kind in Pierce County, representing a partnership between Franciscan Health System and the American Cancer Society. Each week, the Cancer Resource Center provides a staff member at the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center

This provides support and information services to cancer patients and their families. It is a “one-stop” shopping center for cancer resources, including:
  • Computer to access online information
  • Conference area where patients and loved ones can consult with a cancer patient navigator
  • Magazines, pamphlets and booklets
  • Direct access to the American Cancer Society as well as the National Cancer Institute's Information Service
  • Calendar of events for cancer patients
