The Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center offers state-of-the-art radiation therapy treatments in a convenient, outpatient setting where patients don't have to travel far from home for treatment.

Through an innovative partnership between Franciscan Health System and the Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Center, advanced technology in radiation therapies is now available close to home in a warm, healing environment.

With three decades of experience treating patients, our radiation oncologists have become recognized leaders in providing high quality, personalized cancer care.

Our multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals offers many treatment options for patients with all types of cancer, utilizing the latest innovative techniques and equipment. Our patients are usually referred to us so that we may determine if his or her condition can be helped by radiation treatments. If radiation treatments are indicated, our radiation oncologists work with certified medical dosimetrists, utilizing state-of-the-art treatment planning software to ensure that the best possible treatment plan is administered.

thumbKenneth Bergman, MD, A board-certified radiation oncologist, Dr. Bergman joined the staff of Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in 2002. His areas of specialization include 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, as well as breast and prostate cancer. Along with the Jane Thompson Russell Cancer Care Center, Dr. Bergman is a staff member at St. Joseph Medical Center and St. Francis, St. Clare, Good Samaritan, and Auburn General hospitals.

Dr. Bergman completed his residency training at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was awarded an American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Fellowship, and did his internship at Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.

Dr. Bergman received his bachelor's degree from the University of California - Santa Barbara and his medical degree from UCLA; he graduated with academic honors from both colleges. While at UCLA, he was involved in basic science and clinical research and published several papers about his work using Positron Emission Tomography (PET), an imaging technique that enables physicians to monitor the chemical function of organs and tissues.

He holds memberships with the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology, and the American Medical Association.

thumbDean Mastras, MD earned his bachelor's degree from Lehigh Universityin Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and his medical degree from University of Vermont in Burlington. He completed his postgraduate training at University of Hawaii in Manoa and University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle and was certified by the American Board of Radiology.

Dr. Mastras joined Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in 1993. He holds medical staff privileges at St. Joseph Medical Center and Tacoma General, Good Samaritan, Allenmore, St. Francis St. Clare and Auburn General hospitals.

He holds memberships in multiple medical societies including the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American College of Radiation Oncology, Western Association of Gynecologic Oncologists, and the American Medical Association.

thumbMichael McDonough, MD is a native of Tacoma, Dr. McDonough received his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and his medical degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, California and he completed residency training in radiation oncology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He is board certified in therapeutic radiology.

Dr. McDonough practiced radiation oncology at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. He also served on the faculty of the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo. He returned to Tacoma to join the Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in June 2001 and holds medical staff privileges at St. Joseph Medical Center and Tacoma General, Good Samaritan, Allenmore, St. Francis, St. Clare and Auburn General hospitals.

He holds memberships with the Pierce County Medical Society, Washington State Medical Association, American College of Radiology, American College of Radiation Oncology, American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and American Brachytherapy Society. His clinical interests include 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, brachytherapy, breast and prostate cancer, and hyperbaric medicine.

wangHerbert Wang, MD earned his medical degree from the University of California at Davis, School of Medicine. He completed a one-year internship at the University of California, San Francisco / California Pacific Medical Center prior to his residency and fellowship in radiation oncology at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He remained as an instructor for one year at the University of Chicago before venturing into private practice. Dr. Wang is board certified.

Dr. Wang joined Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers in August of 2004. He holds staff privileges at Auburn General Hospital, Good Samaritan, MultiCare Health System, and Franciscan Medical Group.

He holds memberships in multiple medical societies including: American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Radiology, American College of Radiation Oncology, American Medical Association, Pierce County Medical Association, and Washington State Medical Association.

sandersKevin Sanders, MD A native of Alaska, Dr. Sanders received his medical degree and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign Medical Scholars Program. He completed his radiation oncology residency at MD Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, which has been ranked as the number one cancer center in the country four out of the last five years.

Dr. Sanders is extensively trained in all aspects of radiation treatment with a special expertise in highly conformal radiation treatment including Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatments (IMRT). The goal of this treatment is to deliver maximum dose to the tumor while avoiding surrounding normal tissues. He also completed a fellowship with the Seattle Prostate Institute on Prostate Brachytherapy. Dr. Sanders is board eligible by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiology.

Dr. Sanders joined the Tacoma/Valley Radiation Oncology Centers team in 2006. He has membership in American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, American College of Radiology, American Brachytherapy Society, American Medical Association, and his application is in the works for Pierce County Medical Society and Washington State Medical Society.

bittnerNathan Bittner, MD has a long list of academic and professional achievements to his credit and he's a highly valued addition to our clinic staff.

After receiving both bachelors and masters degrees in the Department of Bioengineering from the University of Washington, Dr. Bittner went on to earn a medical doctorate from the University's highly acclaimed School of Medicine. He remained to complete his Internal Medicine Internship and Radiation Oncology Residency within the University of Washington hospital system.

As a resident, Dr. Bittner authored articles in a number of peer-reviewed journals. He also presented his research at several national meetings. As a chief resident, he served as the fellowship coordinator for the American Brachytherapy Society. He serves on the Guidelines and Standards Committee of the American College of Radiology.

Ann Pittier, MD earned her bachelor's degree at Occidental College before pursuing her medical degree at Trinity College and completing an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Washington. She furthered her training with an emphasis on cancer treatment, and completed a second residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Dr. Pittier is particularly passionate about the treatment of breast and gynecologic cancers. Additionally, she has a strong background in utilizing radiotherapeutic treatments for solid tumors, including pulmonary, gastrointestinal, head and neck, sarcoma, and central nervous system disorders. Dr. Pittier has extensive experience with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, Image Guided Radiation therapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. She is also highly skilled at brachytherapy for breast, gynecologic and prostate cancers.

Dr. Pittier is currently board certified in Internal Medicine as well as board eligible by the American Board of Radiology. She is a member of the American College of Radiation Oncology.
